Death has helped Morgan make quite a good living

LOS ANGELES -- Death has been kind to Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
The 41-year-old Seattle native became a sensation in 2006 as heart transplant patient Denny Duquette on the medical soap Grey's Anatomy. Simultaneously, he was enjoying roles on Supernatural as the demon-sparring dad of the show's studly siblings, and on the pot-and-burbs dramedy Weeds as Mary Louise Parker's late husband. All three characters had one thing in common: They were either dead, dying or soon-to-be killed off.
"I'm the luckiest bastard in the world," says Morgan, currently seen romancing widow Hilary Swank in the comedy P.S. I Love You.
"Who knew dying on television would change my life so much? I just didn't know. I died before and nothing (happened). Before Grey's, I had no career."
And since Denny's demise, he hasn't stopped working, shooting movies back-to-back. "I haven't had any time off in-between. No one had ever given me a script before I said, 'Do you want to do this?' -- especially one that's decent. That never happened before."
Nor had he ever been overwhelmed by the response of fans."When Denny died, I couldn't go anywhere for a period of time. Women still come up to me in tears and it's been a year and a half or two years. But right when it happened, I kid you not, I got tackled in the produce section of a super-market. It literally happened. Women would cry ... To this day, people call me Denny wherever I go."
Originally, Morgan expected to reunite with Grey's Anatomy creator Shonda Rimes on a drama about journalists called Correspondents. That project was nixed, however, when Rimes and ABC opted to pursue the Grey's spin-off Private Practice instead. "Now she's doing two shows full time. I don't think it's possible for anyone to do three and make them quality shows. So we'll see ... But it's been fine for me because I've been able to do all these films. Not that I wouldn't love to work with Shonda again -- I owe her my life."
And as if to illustrate how busy Morgan is, on this day he arrives for interviews sporting a moustache and tousled hair-do -- reminders of the project he's presently filming in Vancouver: Watchmen. The adaptation of the ground-breaking graphic novel is being directed by 300's Zack Snyder.
Since its publication in 1986, the dark comic noir -- which Time magazine hailed as one of the 100 greatest English-language novels of the past century -- has been circled by such filmmakers as Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum) and Terry Gilliam (Brazil).
In it, Morgan portrays the cigar-smoking sociopath the Comedian.
"It's a monster," he says. "I know why it took decades to make because it's just huge. We're about halfway through principal photography right now and all I can really say is, it's completely true to the novel.
"I look in at the sets and look at the book and I'm just amazed ... Zack's going to make a movie that's going to blow everyone away."
And as fans of the story know, the superhero murder-mystery kicks off with -- fittingly enough -- the Comedian's death. ''
